J.K. Rowling’s New Book

Hey everybody,

I’ve only just seen this while surfing the web. J.K. Rowling is releasing her newest book since the Harry Potter series. It’s called Casual Vacancy. Here is the link to see what the book is about on the Indigo site.

Let me know what you think. Are you a JK fan? Are you happy or not that she’s now writing for adults?

  1. I’m a fan, but having neutral feelings about the new book. I won’t take the time to read it unless it’s a REAL stunner of a book.
HP is going to be horribly hard to stand up to . . .

    1. Hi L,

Thanks so much for dropping by and pitching in!

As I said in my reply above to Patrick, I think that as the HP series progressed, you could see her writing developing and getting better with each book. All you have to do is look at all of the books lined up in order next to each other to see how much more she was putting into each book.

I totally agree that something like the HP series is extremely difficult, if not impossible to stand up to. However, I think she’s purposely trying NOT to stand up to HP by writing an adult genre novel. I think it’s a smart move on her part. All you have to do is look at Dan Brown and “The DaVinci Code”. It took him years to finally follow it up. It was never going to matter what he wrote, nobody was going to say it was as good or better than the first book. He was really in a pickle.

In any case, I’ll definitely be reading The Casual Vacancy. I think she’s got the talent, and I also happen to think that she’s earned a chance to write her way out of the box she’s in!

Cheers! Thanks for commenting. I love chatting about all things writing and story telling.

Hope to talk to you soon!

    1. Hi Patrick,

Thanks so much for visiting, and especially for getting involved!

I think I agree with you, or more likely, I WANT to agree with you. I really thought that her later books in the HP series were getting darker and more adult (which, I suppose, was her intention). I thought that as she progressed to the later books, her writing became sharper and more visceral. So if those things are anything to go by, then I think It bodes well for her adult debut. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
